The end of Sesame Street’s 19th season in 1988 was marked by one very special occasion: Neighborhood regulars Maria and Luis got married in a tear-jerking roof-top ceremony with the whole Muppet gang in attendance. Elmo acted as the ring bearer, bumbling nervously like always as he held the couple’s wedding bands. The episode taught kids about love, marriage, and family — topics that had yet to be addressed in children’s television.
