Our 3 Favorite 'Sesame Street' Movies

Happy birthday, Sesame Street! When the beloved kids' show starts its new season on Tuesday, they'll be celebrating 40 years of Big Bird, Bert & Ernie and Oscar the Grouch. While the TV show has been going strong since 1969, there have also been a fair share of Sesame Street feature films and mini-movie specials. Here are some of our favorites:

Follow That Bird: The first Sesame feature film, this 1985 road movie gives Big Bird a bit of a midlife crisis: He leaves diverse Sesame Street to live with a suburban bird family. As he realizes his mistake and journeys back home, Bird encounters con artists, singing truck drivers and a very freaky carnival -- not to mention Chevy Chase and John Candy.

The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland: In the '90s, Elmo usurped Big Bird's place as the most kid-popular Sesame Street resident -- so for this 1999 feature, the fuzzy red guy took top billing. The plot has Elmo getting lost (via Oscar's trash can) in Grouchland, where his sunny demeanor is met with entertaining derision. The film costars Vanessa Williams (as The Queen of Trash!) and The Princess Bride's Mandy Patinkin.

Don't Eat the Pictures: Every New Yorker's favorite, this straight-to-video film has the whole cast of Sesame Street getting locked in the Metropolitan Museum of Art overnight. Watching Cookie Monster drool over Cezanne's fruit, while Oscar praises all the "old junk" in the ancient Greeks section is downright hilarious.

Christmas Eve on Sesame Street: You gotta love a good Christmas special! This Emmy-winning TV movie has Big Bird trying to solve the mystery of Santa Claus, while Bert and Ernie struggle to get each other the perfect gift with no money (in a cute twist on The Gift of the Magi).

These days, Sesame Street usually opts for DVD specials over big-screen features (like last year's Abby in Wonderland), but we're keeping our fingers crossed for another full-length Sesame movie. After all, the show's only 40 -- it's in the prime of its career!
