After getting polio as a child, Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes) spends his life in an iron lung. He goes to Berkeley and achieves great academic success -- but he never experiences intimacy with a woman.
"A major part of being a human being is love and sex," says William H. Macy, who plays Mark's priest in the new film The Sessions (in theaters now). "He wanted to know that."
Hoping to lose his virginity, Mark contacts a professional -- and that's where Helen Hunt's character comes in.
"I think what this character that I got to play does is walks in and says, 'Wow, okay. This is a really challenging body. Let's go!" the actress explains. "And I think she really does see him and really does want the best for him."
