Set a Quit Date

Aim for two to four weeks in the future. “Your quit date has symbolic value,” says Robert Sokolove, Ph.D., a health psychologist in the smoking cessation program at Boston Medical Center. “It means that after a certain date, things are going to be different.” He suggests picking a day that means something to you—the first day of Lent or Ramadan if you’re religious, July Fourth if you’re patriotic, or your child’s birthday—to increase your likelihood of success.
