After six fabulous seasons of Cosmos and clothes, men and Manolos, friendship and fashion, Sex and the City fans were left without a fix of fabulosity when the series ended. But with the ladies' venture to the big screen in 2008's box-office smash, it was a happy reunion for Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and co. In case you somehow missed the first movie, we’ll bring you up to speed so you know all the details to sashay your way into Sex and the City 2 .
Catching Up with Old Friends:
After years of a romantic push-pull, Big (Chris Noth) made le grand gesture in Paris, telling Carrie she is the one. Meanwhile, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Steve (David Eigenberg) and their son Brady are living in a beautiful Brooklyn brownstone with Magda still taking care of them. Samantha (Kim Cattrall), the uber-cougar, has relocated to L.A. to be with her love Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis), whose movie career is on the rise. And Charlotte (Kristin Davis) -- after a disastrous marriage to the dubious Trey (Kyle MacLachlan) and a heartbreaking struggle with infertility -- is finally ensconced in domestic bliss with her husband Harry (Evan Handler) and their adopted daughter Lily.
When Good Things Go Bad
In true SATC style, it’s not long before things start to go wrong for our ladies. Samantha gets fed up after Smith is constantly held up on set, leaving her bored and alone. It’s becoming clear that their relationship is not long for this world. Over in Brooklyn, Steve goes apoplectic when confessing to Miranda that he had a one-night stand a few months back. It’s sort of a relief to find out he only cheated and isn’t actually having a massive stroke. Miranda is devastated and moves out. Meanwhile, Carrie starts to plan her wedding to Big, and things get immediately, and spectacularly, out of hand.
By the time the “big day” arrives, Carrie is dressed in a Vivienne Westwood gown and small green hat that was no doubt passed on by Robin Hood himself. Far from the simple wedding they agreed on, the wedding has morphed into the social event of the season, staged at the main branch of the New York Public Library (which in reality wouldn’t happen, but that’s another discussion). After weeks of feeling frozen out by Carrie’s neurotic wedding planning, and a drunken comment by a bitter Miranda that getting married is crazy, Big has gotten cold feet. He dials Carrie’s cell to get some last-minute reassurance that in the midst of this matrimonial circus she’ll be there and it’s really all about the two of them. She doesn’t answer, he freaks out; long story short, the wedding doesn’t happen.
Instead of wasting a honeymoon villa, Carrie and the girls go to Mexico to regroup. Carrie sleeps, Miranda reflects, Samantha develops a wandering eye and Charlotte refuses to drink the water fearing Montezuma’s revenge.
Back in the U.S., Carrie’s assistant (played with doe-eyed charm by Jennifer Hudson) is secretly saving all the emails Big is sending Carrie, even though she was instructed to block them. Miranda tells Carrie about the marriage-equals-crazy remark and their friendship screeches to a halt. In Carrie’s mind, that comment is to blame for her relationship ending. Miranda tries to woo Carrie back to best friend status by sending notes, flowers and leaving conciliatory voice mails. Carries finally agrees to forgive Miranda and suggests that Steve deserves the same chance at redemption.
Taking Carrie’s advice, Miranda agrees to talk to Steve and work out their separation. Steve raises his own issues and resentments about their union but they make a deal: Meet in the middle of Brooklyn Bridge foot path if they are each willing to forgive and forget the past and work on building a future to together. As Miranda scans the crowd anxiously, no one is disappointed to see Steve walking toward his wife.
Samantha ends her relationship with Smith, telling him that while she loves him, she loves herself more. She’s unhappy in L.A. and always waiting around for her man is not what Samantha had envisioned for herself. She heads back to New York to pick up where she left off.
Charlotte gets the surprise of her life -- she’s pregnant! And she ultimately goes into labor after a run-in with Big, who drives her to hospital and waits around until baby Rose is born, hoping to run into Carrie.
Carrie finally finds all the missives Big has been sending her and realizes it’s not that Big doesn’t love her -- he just got a little freaked out. They reconcile at the last moment and head to City Hall for the low-key wedding they were meant to have.
