Their love story sounds like an episode of Wife Swap. But Shania Twain assures her fans that despite the dramatic circumstances, her engagement to Frédéric Thiébaud is the real deal.
In 2008, Twain's marriage to her husband of 14 years, music producer Robert "Mutt" Lange (with whom she has a 9-year-old son Eja) ended suddenly when he allegedly left her for another woman. Coincidentally, that woman was reported to be Thiébaud's ex-wife Marie-Anne (a close friend of Twain's), and their marriage also dissolved in 2008.
After both their marriages ended, Thiébaud and Twain found love in one another. In 2009 the two were spotted vacationing together. "Having gone through the suffering of his family splitting apart at the same time and under the same extreme circumstances, he understands me better than anyone," the pop-country superstar revealed at the time.
Now, after their heartbreaking ordeal with their exes, the pair has not only moved on, but have decided to make it official! Twain, 45, dished about their engagement on her official website Tuesday morning. "In the last two and a half years of adjusting to life after separation and divorce, I needed to lean on others more often than I was accustomed to," she wrote. "These people have been gifts...(whose) support I cherish more deeply with each day that passes. Talking about love, I am excited to share some personal news with you; I'm in love! Frederic Nicolas Thiebaud has been a true gift to me as a compassionate, understanding friend and over time, an amazing love has blossomed from this precious friendship. Fred and I are happy to announce, our ENGAGEMENT!"
Twain also says she not only has a "renewed faith in love and commitment" but she feels "optimistic about the future." She concludes the post with, "I'm looking forward to what the new year has in store and to sharing it with you. So, I'll be in touch with more news and details soon. Until then, have a fantastic holiday season and I wish you love."
