4. Dad plays a huge part. Kids model their parents' behavior. If Dad treats everyone with respect, so will the children.

5. Know that it takes time. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are bonusfamilies. Studies show that it takes a good five years before a stepfamily congeals into a working unit. Unfortunately, while parents are working out the kinks, the kids just keep getting older. That's why, the sooner the parents can start trying to get along, the better. Make your children's best interest your mutual goal. If you honestly do that, eventually everything will fall into place.
