Late in 2012 Sharon Osbourne told British magazine Hello! that she underwent a 13-hour surgery to have a preventive double mastectomy, saying that she had tested positive "the breast cancer gene" though not revealing whether it was BRCA 1 or 2. In either case, the gene mutation significantly raises a women's risk of developing breast cancer, but a mastectomy reduces that risk by about 90 percent, according to the Mayo Clinic. "For me, it wasn't a big decision, it was a no-brainer," she told Hello! "I didn't want to live the rest of my life with that shadow hanging over me. I want to be around for a long time and be a grandmother to [son Jack's daughter] Pearl."
