Olympic snowboarder Shaun White is known for many things: his extreme sports, his apparel line and video games, and his flowing flame-red locks. Well, one of those descriptors is no longer fitting, because the internationally renowned athlete has drastically changed his signature look -- for a good cause.
In a YouTube video he posted on Dec. 18 that already has over 500,000 views, White explains his tress-formation en route to a hair salon, "I've been thinking about this one for a while. But it's for a good cause so I want to do it. Somebody needs it more than I do."
White, who planned to donate his hair to Locks of Love, goes on in the video called "It's Only Hair": "I haven't told anybody I'm doing this is the best part. I'm just going to show up and mindfreak people."
The snowboarding king, 26, is then shown going into a salon and introducing a stylist named Israel.
"I'm a little nervous. You have to go easy on me," White tells the stylist before he's even in the chair. White admits that he's "panicking" during the shampoo job and is fidgety before the haircut begins. Israel the stylist puts White's hair into one final pony cut and with one slice starts to remove White's ponytail.
"Oh my goodness! Stop," White says, but it's too late.
White holds up his pony tail, shows it to the camera and says, "I did it for you, Locks of Love."
The result is a haircut that looks better suited to a board room than snowboarding, and White admits he hasn't had hair that short "in forever," but the clean-cut image suits him, and it was all to help kids suffering from hair loss due to illness.
