My mom is a gem—not just because she worked nights so she could be home with us during the day or because she did the little things that make childhood so wonderful (hot cookies waiting on the table when we came home from school--mmmm). But one of the things I appreciate most about her is the fact that she never once pointed out anything negative about my appearance—ever. There were no comments about my weight, hair, fashion (and oh boy, was it bad fashion!), etc. And I know from conversations with my friends that this is a rare quality in a mom. Mine never said anything—unless it was positive--about the way I looked, and that went a long way with me in terms of developing a healthy body image. I’m a mom now, and I hope I have the wisdom to keep my mouth shut in the important moments—because I know just how valuable it can be.
