The final three finally met the ultimate hair guru -- Vidal Sassoon. After he gave them a speech about giving back, how proud he is of the threesome (even though he held up four fingers, not three!), he headed out. Rene told them to pick a box that will determine the order for which they will choose their designer clothes for their challenge. Their options, Luca Luca, Cynthia Rowley, and Dina Bar-El. Daisy, Anthony and Ben linked up with the wardrobe, respectively. Then, they spent their time alone, contemplating how much they deserve the crown.
The competitors got dolled up, left the loft for the last time and strolled their luggage to the salon for the final challenge; three hours to create three distinct looks, only two of which I could actually understand what Rene was saying; they must use color in one style and could do whatever they wanted for the other. Oh, and the Nancy Kwan bob for the third. The stylists were matched up with their hair models and were given the green light. Ben's "story" he was telling through his designs was "Outer to Inner Beauty." He quickly learned that his first model is going to be upset when he cuts her hair short. Ditto Anthony's model. His story was "Modern Movement." Daisy was going for the "S Curve," sporting different waves. Problem was, her curling irons didn't get hot due to lack of power. But she pushed through and tried pin curls for the first time. Growing frantic with watchdog Rene nearby, she dropped her bowl of hair color. Eh, the five second rule came into play. There was no more time to mix more.
“Anthony, do you think the judges are going to like that? I’m just asking you,” remarked a cocky Rene. “Go away, the judges are going to love it,” he replied. Anthony was way over Rene being there. Yikes, as if Daisy didn’t have enough bumps in the road to deal with, her pin curls didn’t dry. Ben was working down to the wire, as well. At the last minute, Daisy and Anthony noticed Ben’s updo was not going to work. “Five minutes. I’m getting tears in my eyes,” mocked Rene. The men celebrated, while Daisy wasn’t able to complete her vision.
The judges, Vidal, Jaclyn, Sally and Michael, gathered near the runway and told the contestants what they were looking for, and what went along with the title of “Shear Genius.” Daisy’s three models were first down the catwalk. Anthony was confident when his girls strutted by, but their hair was quite boring. Ben was also happy with his looks. Daisy explained her story, and got ripped apart by Sally and Michael. However, Vidal had nice things to say. Anthony told his story, explaining what he did with the girls’ hair. Sally was complimentary. Michael compared one ’do to an ‘80s mall cut. Ouch. Mr. Sassoon loved asking the models to shake their hair. Kinky. Last, but not least, Ben shared the reasoning behind his work. Michael said his updo looked like an embryo. Probably not what Ben was going for.
During deliberation, Vidal pointed out how hard doing three hairstyles (including color) in three hours is. They pointed out that adding bangs to one of Anthony’s girls made her look like she had plastic surgery because it looked so good. Don't let that get out or Dr. 90210 will be out a few million bucks. Compliments flew with Ben’s creations, as well. The judges chatted up all three stylists and what great people they are. The remaining contenders were anxious to hear their decision. Jaclyn told them, one by one, their unique, great qualities. “Which stylist is a cut above the rest?” she asked. “Daisy, I’m sorry, you haven’t made the final cut.” Sad. Daisy bounced off the set, proud of herself anyway. “Anthony, you are the winner,” she announced. Ben quickly hugged the winner, and was happy enough with second place. “It means so much,” Anthony squealed. Everyone drank champagne.
For a finale of a freshman show, this was bor-ing. The winner reveal was so uneventful. I wish the final cut meant chopping 50 minutes from the episode to only show snide comments and/or funny flashbacks.
I say Dr. Boogie takes Rene's place if it returns for a second season. Agree?
