NSD: What was your big turning point-either during the show or before that made you realize you needed to lose the weight?
When I went to the ranch, I went to help my daughter, Ashley, lose weight though I knew I needed to lose some myself. Look at my beginning pictures, I needed to lose a lot of weight. I found myself again along the way and I had to do this for me -- I wanted to do it for me! Also, I wasn't sure I could do all the work and lose the weight but I've proved to myself that I CAN! If this now 52-year-old couch potato can do it, YOU CAN TOO!
NSD: What is one thing you wish you had known before going on The Biggest Loser?
Truly how much it would change my life and how incredible I could feel again!
NSD: Do you think it's harder or easier to be on the show with a family member as a teammate as opposed to competing by yourself?
It is absolutely much easier to be with a family member and for me, that was my daughter, Ashley. You have someone with you to encourage you and keep you going when it gets difficult. Also it is vital to have someone there you can totally trust and you know has your back, especially when all the game play happens. Also, it helps get you through times when you miss your family at home with no letters, calls, emails, no contact [with family at home].
NSD: If you could have done one thing differently during the show, what would it be?
I seem to shed quite a few tears. Maybe not cry as often. I have always been someone who cries with every emotion.
NSD: What's the hardest thing to adapt to while living on the ranch?
I think by far the hardest thing was to have no communication with your family -- especially my other daughter, Cyndie. Even when she was away, we always communicated by phone and email. This was the longest time I've ever not talked with her during her 29 years.
NSD: What is one thing that keeps you motivated when you don't feel like working out or you want to eat junk food?
I try to remember how hard I've worked to get where I am so far and realize I can reach my goal weight! I'm not sure I "knew" that when I started. I feel SO much better physically, emotionally, and mentally that I want to keep it up. This keeps me going and away from the junk food. I feel if you have a craving so badly that you want to binge, take only one bite and walk away! I think it satisfies your cravings and doesn't derail your weight-loss goals.
NSD: What is your favorite workout?
My favorite workout is one that burns lots of calories and sets the bar above my reach. I have to keep pushing until I get there, like Bob and Jill [pushed me] on the ranch. I have realized that I CAN push harder than I ever thought and can accomplish my goals. For specifics, I like to change up my workouts and do different things: spining, swimming, circuits, walking/running, light weights, boxing, etc.
NSD: What's the best advice Bob or Jillian gave you?
Both gave me great advice. Jill asked me to step back and allow her to work with Ashley without my interference and I did. It helped both of us. As for Bob, he had a heart-to-heart with me and encouraged me to be the "super glue" for my family -- to be strong and lead. I am doing that again!
NSD: What is your favorite healthy meal or snack?
Sometimes you miss the taste of unhealthy foods so I try to make it healthy. This is one of them: I'm enjoying a snack of half of a wheat sandwich thin, two tablespoons of Erico Pizza Sauce, topped with two tablespoons of low-fat cheese and garlic. I add raw vegetables to it like onion, mushrooms, spinach, etc. Bake it and it's about 100-calorie snack -- healthy and satisfying!
NSD: What's something viewers at home wouldn't know from watching the show?
They would not know that the gym has no air conditioning or heat. There are fans, but it gets really hot and really cold in there.
Watch The Biggest Loser on Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
