Shock and Denial

An initial reaction to loss is often difficulty accepting what has happened or even denying the truth. Denial can provide temporary emotional protection, preventing you from becoming overwhelmed. “Denial is our coping mechanism to deal with the pain,” says Kessler, also the author of Grief.com. “A person has to move away from reality for a few minutes because reality is too painful.”
