Has your system slowed down? First consider your diet -- have you been on a fried food binge? Can you not remember the last time you ate a fruit or vegetable? Did you recently start taking a prenatal vitamin? Any of those can trigger constipation. But if you’re eating the same as ever, pregnancy might be the cause. “Constipation is a common symptom,” says OB/GYN Lisa Valle, D.O., who has worked as medical expert on Discovery Health’s, I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant. “The cause is hormonal fluctuations, namely progesterone, and the need for extra fluid during pregnancy.” The progesterone slows down your digestive system, and because your body is using its fluids to grow a baby and produce extra blood, there's less to keep you regular.
