Most of the time, we hear news about The X Factor the old-fashioned way. Through gossip websites. Ah, but today we get to hear some fun, insider tidbits from the horses…er, judges' mouths! The members of the season 2 judging/mentoring panel, Simon Cowell, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid, have sat down for an interview with TV Guide.
Even though they didn't address some of the more sensational gossip swirling around the show (like TMZ's report that Britney stormed off the set, and Cowell and Spears' video response), Spears opened up about how Cowell first asked her to join the show. "He was absolutely adorable on the phone, and he is so sweet," said Spears. "My makeup artist used to do his makeup, and we were joking around about me doing it. So I guess it was one of those meant-to-be things." The TV Guide reporter did not follow up with a question about the $15 million salary negotiations that followed that call. Oh, well.
Thankfully, we did get some answers from Cowell about why he canned his longtime friend, Paula Abdul, after the show's relatively lackluster first season. "I think there was too much history with me and Paula," he said. "I adore her...but it just felt like that relationship was too steeped in American Idol history. With these shows, you can never be complacent." In other words, Cowell doesn't want people to associate his shiny new show with that wretched, tired one he left behind. Abdul reminded viewers of Idol. (Subliminal message: The X Factor, good. Idol, bad.)
So, out with the old and in with the new? Sure! Especially when Cowell seems to have populated this season's panel with two stars who seem to complement -- and compliment! -- each other well. TV Guide captures Spears and Lovato exchanging niceties during the interview. Spears called Lovato a good judge who's "sophisticated" and "cooler than me"; Lovato said Spears is funny and that "I don't think a lot of people have gotten to see her personality and her sense of humor." Meanwhile, Reid mostly just parroted what Cowell had to say.
No doubt we'll be hearing more from these stars as The X Factor gears up for its second season, premiering September 12th and 13th at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Who could resist tuning in?
