Simon Cowell Is Excited to Be a Dad, Never Mind the Obviously "Awkward" Circumstances

The X Factor judge opens up about fatherhood and his girlfriend Lauren Silverman in his first U.S. TV interview since the baby news broke

Even in the midst of scandal, Simon Cowell isn't afraid to speak his mind. On Tuesday, The Ellen DeGeneres Show will air Cowell's first televised U.S. interview since the news broke that he is expecting a baby with his friend's wife. In an advance clip, the X Factor host admits that his initial reaction to the pregnancy was mixed: on the one hand, "it's exciting," and on the other, "this is going to be a bit of a nightmare." "It was kind of uncomfortable. You know, the situation," Cowell, 53, tells Ellen DeGeneres with a grimace. “But these things happen and everything is kind of calm now and I’m happy. I’m actually happier than I’ve ever been."

While Cowell doesn't go into details about the "awkward" circumstances of his affair, he does take a moment to defend his girlfriend Lauren Silverman, 36. (As of Aug. 14, the socialite is divorced from Simon's former pal Andrew Silverman.)

"I can't blame the media, because it was kind of what I'd call a juicy story," Cowell acknowledges, "but there was a lot of stuff said about her, like she trapped me and that she’s a gold digger. Absolute nonsense. She's a great girl."

Nice to see Cowell stick up for his lady, given how the press immediately put all the blame on her. It would appear that Cowell and Silverman are officially a couple now that her divorce has been finalized; they've been spotted vacationing in the south of France, and photographed kissing outside a London restaurant. Cowell has also rented a luxury apartment for Silverman (to the tune of $26,500 a month) on New York City's Upper East Side. But there are no marriage plans, as far as we know.

Meanwhile, Cowell has insisted that impending fatherhood won't change him.

"I'm feeling very paternal," he recently told the Times of London. He then added, "I can assure you: I won't go soft."

We'll see!
