So it looks like Simon Cowell is going to be a father. (Yeah, digest that.) The 53-year-old talent show mogul who makes comments like "Does God have a return policy? If he gave me that voice, I'd give it back" is going to be nurturing a child.
Here's the part that's even harder to wrap our heads around: The mother is said to be Lauren Silverman, the 36-year-old wife of Cowell's close friend, Andrew Silverman, a real estate tycoon in New York City. According to Us Weekly, she is about 10 weeks pregnant.
"Lauren and Andrew have been unhappy in their marriage for some time, and their divorce has been in the works for a while," a source told Us. "As their marriage deteriorated, she and Simon became close."
Cowell was reportedly blindsided by the news. "This is a very sensitive issue and all media enquiries are being dealt with by his U.S. attorney," a British rep for Cowell told People. Naturally, the attorney didn't return calls. Nor did Cowell answer questions shouted at him by reporters as he exited a L.A. studio and hopped into a car on Wednesday night.
And according to the New York Post, "Andrew is so livid, he’s seeking revenge on both Cowell and his straying wife. … He’s taking the highly unusual step of embarrassing Cowell personally by naming him as a co-respondent in divorce papers, which were filed under the radar in Manhattan Supreme Court two weeks ago."
Back in January, paparazzi snapped photos of Simon and Lauren lounging together on a yacht in St. Barts -- along with Andrew, who was looking cozy with Cowell's ex-fiancee, Mezhgan Hussainy. Who knows what's going on with these good-looking, jet-setting socialites? Maybe they have their own relationship rules?
Of course, the act of raising children has its own rules. Namely, you've got to take care of them. Cowell acknowledged as much in 2009, when he told Us Weekly that he wasn't cut out for having kids. "With kids, you've got a routine you can't escape from," he said. "You've got to be up at a certain time. Got to listen. When all you want to do is sit in a corner thinking."
But he's also recently admitted to changing his mind on the subject. "I do really, really like kids, because I can talk to them and listen to them," he told AOL. "The problem has always been how much time you need to devote to bringing up kids and I've always dedicated all my life to work, and at 52, I've probably missed the opportunity."
It appears he was wrong. Opportunity has indeed knocked, so… congratulations?
