It seems like becoming engaged hasn't softened notoriously cranky American Idol judge Simon Cowell. Cowell stopped by friend and fellow X Factor judge Piers Morgan's talk show, Life Stories, last week -- and the touchy subject of Sting came up. Why was the topic so touchy, you ask?
Last year Sting, 58, blasted Cowell for "exploiting" and humiliating the competitors who appear on his show. At the time, Sting said of Britain's hit talent show The X Factor (which Cowell will be launching in the U.S. after his departure from American Idol), "It's a proposterous show and you have judges who have no recognizable talent apart from self-promotion, advising them what to wear and how to look. It is appalling."
Cowell, 50, took offense to the sentiment and let it be known when he spoke with Morgan. Entertainment blog PopCrunch reports that Cowell called Sting "an idiot" in the interview and criticized the singer's opinion on the reality competitions, pointing out Sting's success and saying, "I find those kind of people...who come from quite humble beginnings and they're (now) living in these stately homes professing to know everything about everything in the world," adding, "They can say that because they've got everything they want in their lives, but what they're really saying is anybody else who needs a shot shouldn't be allowed to do it."
Cowell made no mention of Sting during his visit to The Tonight Show on Monday, but he did (after some grilling from Jay Leno) 'fess up about his engagement to makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy. The Los Angeles Times reports that a giggling, blushing (yes, you read that right -- blushing!) Cowell shared an on-air smooch with Hussainy after Leno invited her out on stage, and admitted he "made a decision this year to make somebody happy" and that he "bought her the ring in London." Cowell then joked that the pair will wed "within in the next 10 years."
