Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is coming clean about the reason he's in rehab. On Tuesday, the news broke that the Jersey Shore star had checked into a treatment program for "rest and recuperation." But as Sorrentino, 29, explained to his fans on Wednesday, there's a little more to it than that.
"I want to set the record straight. I have voluntarily taken steps to get control of a prescription medication problem I had due to exhaustion," Sorrentino said in a statement posted to his website. "I have spent the past several weeks getting treatment for this problem and recuperating from my work and appearance schedule. I appreciate my fans support and love you guys."
Earlier that day, Sorrentino's website shot down a TMZ report which claimed that Mike "had been showing signs of substance abuse for a while" and was "acting paranoid" during the taping of season 5.
"This is just like the child hood game of 'telephone' -- someone hears a small rumor and blows it out of proportion," wrote the moderator of Sorrentino's news site. "All these websites are doing is spreading gossip/hearsay, and unless you hear it from us, you can't believe everything you read."
Though Sorrentino says not to trust TMZ, the gossip website was the first to report that he'd checked into rehab, and later, that he was there for an addiction to prescription meds. The website is now claiming that he's seeking treatment at the Cirque Lodge in Utah, where Charlie Sheen's ex-wife Brooke Mueller is also reportedly sobering up. (There were reports that Demi Moore did her rehab there as well, but some media outlets denied it.)
MTV has yet to comment on The Situation or his situation, except to say that they "fully expect and are looking forward to the entire cast returning for a sixth season."
A sixth season where Snooki's pregnant and The Situation's sober? What on Earth will Jersey Shore be like if 25 percent of the cast can't drink?
