Insect Bites

Minimize insect bites by wearing light-colored clothing, keeping your skin covered, and avoiding scented soaps, shampoos or wearing any fragrances. Here are some tips for dealing with bugs:

  • For children, look for repellants that have less than 10% deet or that have citronella or soybean oil.
  • Apply repellant to your clothes instead of your skin whenever possible.
  • Wash off repellant as soon as possible.
  • Do daily tick checks of your children.
  • To treat bug bites, try an anti-itch spray like Benadryl, Afterbite, Hydrocortisone (steroid) cream.


  • To treat stings, remove the stinger with a credit card or the dull edge of a blade, and apply an ice pack and baking soda paste.

  • Poison Ivy

  • To soothe poison ivy rash, try hydrocortisone (steroid) cream, Benadryl or calamine lotion.


  • Cuts/Scrapes

  • Wash the wound with water and anti-bacterial soap.
  • Use tweezers to remove any debris in the wound.
  • Apply an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin.
  • Apply bandages or gauze to the wound and reapply as necessary to keep the area clean.
