Hallelujah! Saturday Night Live is adding two new cast members—and they're both women.
The Comic's Comic broke the news that Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad, two young gals who're well known around the New York standup comedy scene, will join SNL for its for its 35th season. NBC won't comment on the new hires yet, but sources say it's a done deal.
This comes as welcome news, since there's been something of an estrogen drain on SNL since Tina Fey and Amy Poehler jumped ship for their own shows. Since then, the fabulous Kristin Wiig has shouldered most of the burden in proving that women can be both funny and super-weird (no offense to cast member Casey Wilson's cougar impersonation). But Wiig's star has been rising so fast, what with all her scene-stealing in Knocked Up and Adventureland, that she could be bounced off to Hollywood soon enough.
Slate, at least, has a proven track record for being super-weird. She is one half of comedy duo Jenny & Gabe, whose characters include a come-hither video dating applicant (who shoots her profile draped across a twin-bed) and a middle-class pathological liar named Devra. She's also worked for NBC before, playing an assistant on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon's spoof reality show, 7th Floor West.
The Iranian-born Pedrad is most of a mystery. She's an alum of the Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic, but most off her online comedy videos have been pulled down since word has leaked about her new gig.
Either way, nice to get a new female perspective on the show!
