Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has always taken heat for her appearance. Four-foot-nine, overtanned and buxom, the self-proclaimed "meatball" didn't look like anybody else on MTV. Now that she's lost 42 post-pregnancy pounds, however, she looks much more like your typical skinny starlet.
Has that stopped the body snarking? Of course not.
Now, Snooki is getting slammed for being too thin. Star recently reported that the reality TV icon is starving herself, consuming only lettuce, egg whites and alcohol. But Snooki has never let the haters get her down, and she's not about to start now.
"'Too skinny' my ass. #FIT," the former Jersey Shore star tweeted on Wednesday, along with a photograph of herself flexing at the gym. She added this message to her critics:
People always say"ur not the same Snooki."As sure as hell hope not.People change, they mature& GROW up. It was time & I'm better than ever— NiC0LE P0LiZZi (@snooki) June 12, 2013
Now, we don't know if Snooki is necessarily losing weight in a healthy manner. We'll admit that alarm bells went off when we first saw the dramatic change, given the she has a history of eating disorders. But we do know that she's not achieving the weight loss by some weird gimmick, like that cookie diet she once promoted. It's obvious that Snooki has become a fitness junkie. Girl is buff. From the workout videos she's been posting on her Celebuzz blog, you can see that Polizzi has been putting in plenty of dedicated gym time. And we're pretty sure you can't build muscles like that without eating some protein, right?
Okay, fine, we're hypocrites: We actually are worried that Snooki is too skinny. But that's not the point we're trying to make. The point is, Snooki's body belongs to her, and she's the only one who should determine what it looks like. Healthy looks different for different woman. Just because gossip magazines love to declare celebrities "too fat" or "too skinny," doesn't give them the power to make that decision. When it comes to women's bodies, everyone feels entitled to weigh in (no pun intended). Frankly, that's not okay.
And we're glad this is something that Snooki understands. Despite her history of weight struggles, she's never had any tolerance for body snarking. When she put on some pounds during the filming of Jersey Shore, she unapologetically declared, "I’m just a normal person, not a model" -- and went right on wearing those skin-baring swimsuits. People do change over time, and that goes for their bodies too: Most of us (especially women), experience plenty of ups and downs over the years. We hope that Snooki is doing what's best for her body right now, and that she's as good at tuning out the haters as she says she is.
