It was just another day on SYTYCD, full of questionable fashion and tearful goodbyes.
Oh, who are we kidding? We were all licking our chops and waiting for THE APOLOGY.
Would Mia acknowledge what had happened? Would Wade say anything about his piece?
First we had to endure a piece that featured Danny literally playing a marked man with a blinking X on his chest. All the other dancers fell down around him, leaving him victorious. Or was everyone else just taken out like the plague? It was difficult to tell. Subtle work, Michaels. You knew it was a Mia Michaels piece throughout, which made the night's lead-off especially interesting.
After Wednesday night’s adventures into the anti-war/anti-anti-war debate, tonight we found ourselves in the midst of a PR windfall. Mia apologized specifically to the Marine Corps for wearing the jacket, saying a friend lent it to her and that she did not understand the connotations of its emblems.
“Is anyone pro-war?” Nigel asked. He made a point to apologize for Wade (who was absent; hopefully due to a busy schedule and to avoid an apology), saying that it was his art speaking. Until we learn to appreciate art, Nigel said, we’ll never be at peace. I’m not sure why I assumed that Wade would say these words, and I’m not sure why I expected both Wade and Mia to apologize, but I was glad that it was mentioned.
Mary had nothing to contribute, so Cat asked her how she felt about losing control of who stays and who leaves. Mary expressed that she didn’t like relinquishing the control, but it did improve inter-judge relations since there was no longer a need to argue.
Everything else seemed to pale in comparison to all the drama, even Cat’s fashion. Cat’s dress: Not bad. Cat’s jewelry: Not bad. Cat’s hair: Questionable. They were trying so hard for that Sense and Sensibility/Scarlett Johansson’s Louis Vuitton ads look, but again, it was slightly my first-grade-art-project-ish. High fashion in hair in the real world is rough business.
But onto a quick distraction: Mika’s performance. My first thought: I have those pants -- and they look better on him than on me! Our guy took the stage in the epitome of what the past two weeks’ tabloid magazines have defined as “hipster chic”: tapered colored jeans, red Ray Bans, fake vintage tuxedo shirt and brand-new metallic kicks. Uh, no offense, he just looks like any kid from Brooklyn, only they’re not trying to be cool like that. And he sure was jumping up and down a lot, yet we never once heard the sound of him breathing. Either he's out to give Kenny G a run for his money, or he's using a backing track. Tricky tricky! He gets extra points for the chick drummer in the purple latex pants/corset ensemble. This is Life in Cartoon Motion, after all. He finished the song by swinging his microphone around. Mika, you’re no Adam Lazzara; go YouTube a few performances and learn how it’s done.
FINALLY it was time for eliminations. After brief replays of Wednesday night’s performances of each dancer, the bottom four were announced: Jaimie, Lauren, Dominic and Kameron. Now all four would dance, but it would not affect their stay status. Since all the top 10 dancers were on the tour, there was no need for them to be devastated about not winning. All danced great solos, but in the end, it was Jaimie and Kameron who were sent home.
As soon as Kameron’s name was announced, girls in the front yelled, “NO!” with tears in their voices. After Mia’s teardown last night, it must have been an image-punch to America’s ego, which seemed to vote for personality over hotness. Jaimie, who throughout the season has struggled with questionable partnerships, handled her elimination with grace and poise – as one would expect, seeing as how no matter what, she’s already on the tour.
And BTW, thanks to the show's photogs zooming in closer on the group shots -- NOT. Sadly, Dominic was a casualty of Photoshop.
Should Jaimie and Kameron have gotten the boot?
Why did Dominic and Lauren get to stay -- care to share?

Thank you to everyone who made a point to comment on yesterday’s entry regarding the matter of Mia’s jacket and explaining your viewpoints. On last night’s show, Mia attempted to explain that she had been lent the jacket by a friend, had no idea what it meant, and simply worn it to go with the theme of the show. Many of you who commented felt that, having worked so hard for the privilege to wear the uniform, that her wearing it as nothing more than fashion was deemed offensive.
What made you watch the show on Thursday if Wednesday night had offended you?
Did you believe Mia’s apology?
Was this all a publicity stunt and, if so, will its outcome be positive or negative?
