Soft Cervix: Is Labor Imminent?

I am 30-weeks-pregnant and I have been told that my cervix has softened. I have also dilated one-and-a-half centimeters in the past two weeks. Does this mean that our baby will come early?

Question:

There is no way to tell. The soft, slightly open cervix can stay there for weeks before you deliver. Or you could go into early labor tonight. You will have to watch for labor signs, such as increased discharge or spotting and increased pressure. All these signs can be normal pregnancy occurrences, too, but they might provide a clue.

Meanwhile, try not to worry. Most of the time, these early signs do not indicate preterm labor, just that your cervix is slowly getting ready for the main event in several weeks.
