Sophisticated Kids' Rooms

On trend (and on budget!) for 2013: rooms that grow with your kiddo and her changing tastes. That's the thought behind the move toward sophisticated kids' rooms, which are decidedly more hip than twee. (Think mid-century modern instead of Mickey Mouse.)

"Parents want rooms that appeal to their own adult design sensibilities," says Sarah Coombs, a New York City–based interior decorator and owner of Sarah Coombs Design for Spaces and Places. "This isn't to say they want rooms that are sterile or sleek, just not overtly juvenile." That could mean anything from installing a glam chandelier to hanging real artwork, gallery-style, to using a cheerful -- but not saccharine -- color palette. The result? A room you'll want to spend time in, too.
