She appeared to be considering it last month, but Janet Jackson has now officially passed on Simon Cowell's offer to take part in The X-Factor. The pop icon, 45, said in a statement on Thursday that she's "very flattered that X Factor let me know that I was being considered for next season, but it just wouldn't be possible."
Why is the judging panel not a possibility for Janet? The singer's rep tells E! News that she has her hands full with two other projects: her Number Ones Up Close & Personal Tour, and an upcoming Tyler Perry film. In fact, the rep says she's so busy that she has had "absolutely no meetings" with Cowell and company. (Simon told E! in February that Jackson was "being discussed" as a judge.)
So who is still being considered to replace fired X Factor judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger? Britney Spears is reportedly lobbying for a position at the judge's table, and her efforts seem to be paying off; new reports say that Cowell is "definitely talking" to the "Till the World Ends" singer. Simon has also said that Pink and Katy Perry are up for consideration.
"I worked with Katy once," Cowell told Extra. "I think she would be fun because she is hard -- in a good way -- and she's feisty."
Also on Cowell's wish list: Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Fergie -- although all three may be long shots. In the past, he's also thrown out the names George Michael and Nicki Minaj (both of whom seem more likely than Beyonce or Mariah).
Whatever choice Simon makes, he needs to make it soon: season 2 auditions have already begun.
