While it may have come as a surprise to fans that Charlize Theron adopted a baby, friends of the actress apparently knew she was planning to become a mother.
According to People, the Oscar-winning actress "has been trying to adopt a baby for a long time," a source says.
Theron, 36, announced through her rep on Wednesday that she had adopted a baby boy named Jackson.
The Young Adult star "has been very patient and has a great attitude," the source says. "[She] is ecstatic about finally becoming a mom."
Although Theron is currently single (after nine years together, she split from boyfriend Stuart Townsend in 2010), the source stresses that the South African actress will have plenty of help from her family.
And in Hollywood, Theron is far from the only mother who parents solo. Sandra Bullock, Madonna, Denise Richards, Connie Britton and Kristin Davis all adopted without partners by their side. Plus, there's always Grandma!
"Charlize's mom [Gerda] has been helping out with the baby," the Theron insider says. "She seems so happy and will be a great mom."
