Andy Whitfield, star of the cable drama series Spartacus: Blood and Sand on the Starz network, has been diagnosed with a treatable form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Whitfield, 35, said in a statement, "I’m receiving excellent care and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me."
Production on the second season of the gladiator show has been postponed while Whitfield begins receiving treatment this month in New Zealand. Starz network president Chris Albrecht told EW.com, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy. His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time."
The fledgling series -- already notorious for its nudity, profanity and violence -- premiered in January. The Wales native plays the lead role of Spartacus in a cast that includes costar Lucy Lawless (Xena, Warrior Princess).
