The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

The irony: Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) was so clever, he almost certainly could have carved out a successful life of his own. Instead, he became obsessed with wealthy Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), and when Dickie grew tired of Tom's constant presence, Tom killed him and assumed his identity. Then he killed Dickie's BFF Freddie (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to cover that up, and planned to kill Dickie's girlfriend Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow) so he could continue his charade even longer. But the talented Mr. Ripley ultimately proved too clever for his own good and had to destroy his one chance at happiness to continue living his lie.
