Spotting During Pregnancy

I had pink and brown bleeding for about five days before my 10 week exam, but during my ultrasound I saw the heart beating and my baby moving. However, I am still bleeding, -- enough to stain a light pad -- and my breasts are no longer sore. Should I be concerned?

This can be so stressful, waiting on each trip to the bathroom to see if the spotting continues or if it has stopped. It is very normal to be concerned.

Any bleeding or spotting in any week of pregnancy is cause for concern. Sad to say, it may well be that, despite seeing your baby on ultrasound, you could be destined to lose her. The cessation of symptoms is not a good sign, although this can be insignificant.

On the other hand, an intact gestational sac and fetal heart, once observed, decreases the chance of miscarriage. You could continue the pregnancy with spotting and the baby would be just fine. The bleeding is rarely enough to compromise the baby's blood supply and oxygenation.

You should probably be followed by ultrasound and/or hCG readings, though you could wait to see if the heart tone remains strong on doppler and the uterus continues to enlarge.

I wish you well and hope that the pregnancy continues without difficulty.
