Spring Trends Get Trippy at Custo Barcelona

Spanish designer offers up groovy collections for next year

After attending the Custo Barcelona Spring 2011 RTW show over the weekend, I had an incredible urge to hop in a VW van and take off down the California coast. Too bad I'm 3,000 miles away and don’t own a motor vehicle. The latest women and men’s collections from Spanish designer Custo Dalmau definitely remained true to his aesthetic -- with psychedelic prints that would make even Jimi Hendrix say whoa!

The show featured lots of hippie fringe trim, colorful feather detail and beachy, mussed-up hair on the models, evoking a late 1960s West Coast vibe. Some of the stand-out pieces included a flowy tunic with graphic butterfly print, paired with bright Chevron-striped pants; a patchwork one-piece with tie-dyed hooded cardigan; and a flirty miniskirt made from neon-hued plumes with heavy wooden platforms. The anything-goes, mix-and-match feel of the looks recalls gypset style -- perfect for the jetsetter who resort hops. As for menswear, striped suit jackets and plaid pants complemented the dressed-up surfer theme.

Spring Trend 2011 Takeaway: Don't throw out any of your fringed handbags! Instead, dig through your mom's closet for some peace-and-love accessories. Or hit the vintage shops for loose vests, braided belts and funky short dresses.
