When it comes to her relationships with her two superstar daughters, recording artist Wynonna and actress Ashley, Naomi Judd says they're exactly like mothers and daughters' everywhere, their place in the spotlight notwithstanding.
"We're completely typical. I get my feelings hurt. I push the girls' buttons. I installed them '- I certainly know how to push them!" laughs the country singer turned host of Hallmark Channel's inspirational Sunday talkfest Naomi's New Morning. Nevertheless, she says, "My relationship with Wy and Ashley is healthier than the one I have with my mom. We have boundaries '- that's because we've been in therapy. And our relationship is much more expressive. I love them so deeply."
Her daughters, she's quick to point out, are quite dissimilar, which Judd suspects is due to a combination of their birth order and the fact that they have different fathers and were born in different times and places. Wynonna, 41, was born at home in Ashland, Kentucky, "when I was 18," says her mom, "in the same room as my mother had me when she was 18. She's loving, compassionate, a generous spirit. That girl has the biggest heart. She'll apologize and ask forgiveness. She's benevolent. She treats everyone with dignity." Naomi says she's proud of her firstborn for speaking openly about her weight problem and her efforts to deal with it.
As for Southern California-born Ashley, 38, "She's my iconoclast," says Mom. "She's such a seeker, an adventurer. She's very feisty, free-spirited, quite the injustice fighter. She travels the world for YouthAIDS," a cause her sister is actively involved with as well. "I love the way she challenges me '- she constantly makes me practice what I preach."
