Whoa! Starbucks Debuts a Limited-Edition $450 Gift Card

The pricey stocking stuffer for coffee lovers goes on sale Friday

Forget the coffee. If you really need a jolt, just look at your credit card statement after purchasing a $450 gift card...for coffee.

The Starbucks Metal Card, an etched stainless steel gift card, comes loaded with $400, but costs $450. The extra $50 charge is thanks to the actual production cost of the card -- think of it as your “I’m the 1%” coffee tax.

The limited-edition card (the company will only make 5,000) is good for drinks, food, and merchandise at Starbucks locations, and comes with instant gold-level membership, which includes perks like a free birthday drink. (What?! No cake?) Plus, it elicits eyerolls and/or jealous glances from fellow Starbucks customers.

According to USA Today’s math, the gift card equals 119 Grande lattes or 205 Grande brewed coffees, which almost takes care of your workday caffeine fix for a whole year.

This isn’t the first over-the-top offering from the coffee giant. The company recently introduced a $7 large cup of joe made from an exotic blend of beans that’s only being brewed in Seattle and Portland.

The Starbucks Metal Card will go on sale starting tomorrow at noon EST, but will only be available for purchase via the luxury goods website, Gilt.com, not your local Starbucks.

One thing the card doesn’t offer? That the barista will get your name right.
