I knew garage sales were popular this time of year, but the state of California is taking it to a whole new level. This weekend the state is holding the "Great California Garage Sale" to sell surplus government property—and raise money to help balance the state's budget. State officials are estimating that the sale will raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. Items for sale include cars, furniture, computers, electronics and jewelry as well as some more unusual items like a baseball bat, cassette tapes, exercise steps, and a surfboard. Governor Schwarzenegger even signed some of the vehicles, so buyers get his autograph as well as the car.
Unfortunately, you have to be in Sacramento today or tomorrow to take advantage of this experiment in raising funds, but if you're able to check it out, maybe you'll get a glimpse of Governor Schwarzenegger as well as a good deal on a Blackberry or desk chair. And if you can't get to Sacramento this weekend, take some inspiration from the state of California and hold a garage sale of your own.
