chime in now“Start eating real food -- nothing in boxes, cans or cartons,” says Elliott Prag, instructor at the Natural Gourmet Institute. “Get rid of all processed food. You will lose weight if you start doing that.” While you’re at it, reduce your intake of simple carbs like white flour and sugar since research suggests a possible link between simple carbs and type 2 diabetes. Quality is critical but quantity is also pretty important. “We all have a certain amount we like to put on our plate when we’re serving ourselves,” says Jill Gusman, macrobiotic expert, Natural Gourmet Institute instructor and author of Vegetables from the Sea. “We eat with our eyes before we eat with our mouths,” says Gusman. An easy way to start practicing portion control: use a smaller dinner plate.
