Stay Well Testing Tip #3: Pee Before a Pelvic Exam

Having a speculum in your vagina for the Pap test is no picnic when you really gotta go, but it’s even less pleasant when your doctor does the hands-on check of your ovaries and uterus. “We have one hand inside the vagina and the other hand on your lower belly, and we’re pressing down to feel the ovaries and uterus between our hands,” explains Dr. Grimes. “Your bladder’s in between there, too, so everything gets compressed and that’s uncomfortable with a full bladder.” Bottom line: You may not be able to tolerate this hands-on exam very long if you’ve really gotta go.
