Barbara Parr, 66, Registered Nurse
How did you get to be a school nurse?
Originally I was in public health - I helped
run a baby clinic for immunizations and
state-monitored diseases until I had my
daughter. When she was in college, I was asked to be a substitute school nurse. I needed special
certification.
Was that hard?
I was 53 - older than my
professors and the other students.
But I was determined.
I even gave up a lot of golf to do it.
Is golf your game?
I play three times a week.
With osteoporosis?
Sure.
I also walk 3 miles a day. I lift weights.
I have a life to live. I like it full.
There's more?
The historical society,
two stock investment clubs, doing genealogy,
cooking, reading - even trade journals-
they keep me current. There's family. There's friends.
How did you meet your husband?
He was dating my father's secretary.
We started dating. He'd call me every
other night. I asked why. He said
the other nights he caught up on his sleep.
Got any pet peeves?
Lying, even fibs.
What have you been most affected by lately?
A lack of parenting. It breaks my heart. Kids need real attention.
What's your motto?
Care. Listen. Be fair.
What is your background?
German. My family's been in Pennsylvania
for hundreds of years.
CALENDAR TIP:
Barbara's osteoporosis tip: The body needs calcium every day. It's best to split it up your daily requirement (1,200 mg) throughout the day.
The Bone Divas Calendar project is made possible with support and assistance from Roche and GlaxoSmithKline.
