Susan Austin, 62, Recently Retired Flight Attendant
Where'd you just come from?
A vacation in
Budapest. It's gorgeous.
My first time in Eastern Europe.
How long were you a flight attendant?
40 years.
Go away.
Go away? I used to go away every week.
I'd change my flights as often as I could. Bangkok,
Singapore, Amsterdam, Honolulu -
actually all over the U.S.
You don't like routine.
No. I'm
unconventional. I like adventure. I've
never married. I have no children. Love to travel.
When did you learn you had osteoporosis?
About 10 years ago, during a routine physical.
How did you feel?
Shocked, I was 50,
and have no family history for it.
I feared it would limit me - I value my freedom.
What do you do in your spare time?
Enjoy friends. Walk, swim, ski, lift-weights.
I do a lot of photography.
I design gift cards and calendars for friends.
I volunteer for the Seattle Symphony and
attend concerts frequently.
Do you have time for any vices?
I read till 3
or 4 in the morning. And there's always chocolate.
Any travel tips?
Relax. Check your luggage.
How early should you get to the airport?
Depends on the airport.
Any life tips?
Be in the moment.
And- something a teacher once told me-
if you want peace, give up judgments.
Where were you on 9/11?
In Amsterdam.
For five or six days. About 100 crew members.
We watched CNN. The Dutch were very caring.
Some of us took a train ride. We were told all
the trains in Europe would stop at 11:00
to honor what happened. Ours did.
You could've heard a pin drop.
What do you want to be doing in five
years?
Traveling. On my own, in my own way.
What's a Diva?
Someone full of life, expansive, self-assured.
CALENDAR TIP:
Susan's osteoporosis tip: When traveling, pack your osteoporosis medicine. Talk to your doctor about options that may free you from taking it while you're away.
The Bone Divas Calendar project is made possible with support and assistance from Roche and GlaxoSmithKline.
