Blanca R. Vazquez, MD is an assistant professor of neurology, Director of Clinical Trials, and Director of the International Epilepsy Program at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Unit at New York University Medical Center in New York City. She treats adults and children with epilepsy.
Dr. Vazquez received her MD from Cayey School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. Subsequent to her residencies in internal medicine and neurology at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, respectively, Dr. Vazquez completed an epilepsy fellowship at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at New York University Medical Center.
Dr. Vazquez has been awarded numerous grants and has been Principal Investigator in many clinical trials for antiepileptic drugs. Her major research interests are antiepileptic drugs (clinical trials), surgical treatment of epilepsy, women's issues in epilepsy, and epilepsy and behavior. Dr. Vazquez is the author or coauthor of many articles in peer-reviewed journals, educational materials, abstracts, book chapters, and journal supplements. She also is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Epilepsy Foundation of New York City, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, the Spanish American Medical Society of New York, the American Electroencephalography Society, the American Medical Association, and the New Jersey Neurology Association.
Dr. Vazquez is the co-chair of the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of New York City and a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. She has served as co-director of the Neurophysiology training program at the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. She also has conducted local, regional, national, and international presentations, grand rounds, roundtable proceedings, and conferences. Dr. Vazquez is the recipient of the Peter Ho Memorial Award for Humanism in Medicine.
Most recently, Dr. Vazquez served as the medical chairperson for roundtable proceedings and a leadership consensus panel during which the Bill of Rights for People Living with Epilepsy was developed. The Bill of Rights is a guide to managing life with epilepsy, which offers information to help people become more involved in managing many aspects of their condition and includes guidance on topics such as rights at school and in the workplace and current information on epilepsy and treatment options. Dr. Vazquez provided extensive counsel and guidance throughout the development process for the Bill of Rights.
