'Steel Magnolias' (1989)

After shooting this poignant chick-flick gem adapted from the hit Broadway play, Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and continued creating buzz as Hollywood's new It girl. In Magnolias, she's a Southern nurse who dreams only of marrying her boyfriend (Dylan McDermott, who became Roberts' first famous fiancé offscreen) and having babies -- despite her Type 1 diabetes and medical advice against getting pregnant. Her tragic character fuels the film's most heartbreaking moment among her costars (including Tom Skerritt, pictured, Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine), but Shelby's very pink wedding ("Pink is my signature color," she drawls) also provides much of the movie's humor.
