Stephen Colbert for President?

The comedian is ahead of Jon Huntsman. Can he pull past Newt?

Stephen Colbert for President! Sound crazy? Maybe, but the late-night comedian who brought you the Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC: Making a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow is thinking about it. Not content to be a Super PAC influencer with efforts like his elect “Rick Parry with an ‘A,’” Colbert is now eyeing a bigger campaign. That’s not as crazy as it might sound. Colbert has been polling ahead of Jon Huntsman in South Carolina -- Colbert’s home state.

With his unlimited Super PAC money, Colbert had offered to fund the upcoming South Carolina primary election. Now, he’s got his eyes on a bigger prize -- the White House. It's not the first time he's eyed the Oval Office. He also tried to get on the ballot in South Carolina in 2008. If you have a Super PAC, you can’t be a candidate. So last night, Colbert turned the reigns of his political machine over to pal Jon Stewart with the blessing of the Super PAC’s attorney. Watch out America (or should I say “Nation”)! Even though Colbert claimed at one time he was going to help Huntsman go from “two percent to whole milk,” Colbert is now free to launch his 2012 presidential exploratory committee. Though the deadline for getting on the ballot in South Carolina has come and gone, his name may be on another state ballot before you know it.
