When Steven Tyler took a nasty spill in his hotel bathroom in Paraguay Tuesday, his rep called the fall an accident and blamed a bad case of food poisoning. Some media outlets, however, questioned whether Tyler's tumble was the result of a drug and alcohol relapse. But the 63-year-old rocker, who has been sober for the past two years after battling addiction for much of his career, promises that he's very much still on the wagon.
According to Tyler, he was in his hotel room shower when he began to feel dizzy and nauseated. "I started to get sick, and I just fell on my face," he recounted during a phone interview on Thursday's Today show. "I just passed out."
When asked about the relapse rumors, the Aerosmith frontman flat-out denied them. "I get that people think that," he said. "It still bothers me a little, but it's something that I have to have to deal with for the rest of my life." (Watch the Today clip below.)
Tyler's spill in Paraguay -- where Aerosmith was set to perform Tuesday as part of their international tour -- left him with a cut eye and at least one broken tooth, and required a visit to the hospital for emergency stitches and dental work.
"It was like one-stop shopping," he said. "They stitched up my eye. They did a little plastic surgery. And they fixed my tooth. All in one fell swoop."
And although the fall caused Tyler and Aerosmith to cancel their Tuesday night show, they rescheduled it for Wednesday. Like a true troupler, Tyler took the stage Wednesday night and rocked his heart out -- black eye and all. "Short of having my leg taken off, people are going to expect me to take the stage," the American Idol judge said. And, from the sounds of it, Tyler will do just that.
