Just because Steven Tyler isn't a judge on American Idol this year, doesn’t mean he's ready to forget the show altogether.
The 64-year-old rock star stopped by the Oklahoma City auditions in full drag to surprise this season's judges -- Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban -- and he made quite the impression.
Sporting a long blonde wig, a buxom chest and bright-red lipstick, Tyler pretended to be a female contestant named Pepper. (Insert "Dude Looks Like a Lady" joke here.) Urban was roaring with laughter as Carey looked on with horror when Pepper claimed she was going to sing "Tell Your Ma, Tell Your Pa, Our Love Going To Grow, Wah Wah."
"But before I do, I'm gonna judge your asses first,"
Tyler Pepper said to the panel of judges. "I like you men. The roosters may crow, the hens deliver the good, y'all know what I'm saying?"
Of course, the judges immediately saw through the disguise (or more likely, knew well in advance that Tyler was coming). But they did their best to act amused, when Jackson proclaimed, "Steven Tyler is in the house!"
Tyler then whipped off his wig and pleaded with the panel. "Do I go through to Hollywood or what?" Though, unfortunately, he refused to actually sing an audition song -- which probably would have been the one thing that could have saved this awkward joke and made it worth the airtime.
"I just wanted to come by and say hello everybody. I love you. Good luck with this year," he tells the panel, disappointingly not singing. "I tried so hard, no Hollywood for me."
The rocker was clearly aiming for the comedy angle, but we're still trying decide whether he pulled it off. Randy and Keith seemed to enjoy the prank the most, belting out genuine laughter. However, Mariah and Nicki looked distinctly not impressed. (Okay, they weren't quite at McKayla levels, but they certainly weren't uproarious with laughter!) Perhaps it's because they're already battling each other for the spotlight; the last thing they need is another big-boobed diva stealing their show!
And the real question is: What exactly was Steven Tyler doing in Oklahoma City? It seems like a long way to go for such a silly cameo. Was he really there just to support his Idol pals? Does he miss the attention that the show gave him? Or was he already planning a visit to the Sooner State and figured it was the perfect time to drop on by?
