Transitions, especially during peak travel periods, are difficult for kids. But if you're making a road trip, resist the urge to gas it the whole way to save time. Instead plan frequent bathroom and meal breaks, so the kids can relieve themselves, stretch stiff legs or check out the new sights. Yes, it will add 30 minutes to an hour to your journey, but everyone will be happier.
