Stop Expecting the Worst

Problem: You “catastrophize” your pain, thinking you’ll end up in a wheelchair, for instance, or need knee surgery. Studies show that catastrophizing is associated with increased pain and decreased function.

Solution: To overcome it, look at things more rationally and put your pain in perspective. Discuss your fears with your doctor so he or she can reassure you that you’re not headed toward your worst-case scenario.
