'Struck by Lightning' (Jan. 11)

Short Story:
For Carson Phillips (Chris Colfer), life won't truly begin until the miserable days of high school are over. But when Carson's life is cut tragically short by a bolt of lightning, those high school days are all he has to look back on. In this film adaptation of Colfer's YA novel of the same name, Carson narrates the final few weeks of his life, highlighting a classroom blackmail scheme, an alcoholic mother (Allison Janney) and an estranged father (Dermot Mulroney).

What They're Saying:
"One can't blame Colfer for wanting to expand his range, but he's created a character who is neither hero nor villain, in a black comedy that is neither dark nor funny enough." -- New York Daily News

Good for Kids?
For younger viewers, Struck by Lightning is a Catch-22. Common Sense Media notes the film's "positive messages," but also warns for a "somewhat dark" storyline. The film is currently unrated, but might be too heavy for children and young teens.
