How to Look Hotter, According to Men? Wear 40 Percent Less Makeup

Research finds that women are perceived as more attractive when they tone down the makeup

Step away from the eye shadow. Back away from the blush. Leave that lipstick alone. Because, if you really want to be seen as beautiful, you should know the natural look is where it’s at.

At least, that’s the finding of a new study out of Wales that shows men are more drawn to women when they wear 40 percent less makeup than their heavily-made up peers, the U.K.’s Daily Mail reports.

The research, to be published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, also found both men and women predicted they would find women wearing full makeup more attractive, but Bangor University’s Dr. Alex Jones tells the newspaper that “couldn’t be further from the truth,” when it came to rating attractiveness, with both sexes preferring fresh faces.

“The take home message from this study is that our ideas about what the opposite sex find attractive are often inaccurate, whether it relates to body size, weight, or even something like make-up use,” Jones tells the Daily Mail.

Maybe the #nomakeupselfie trend will soon be known as plain ol’ #selfie. But, sorry fellas, we’re not quite ready to toss out our mascara and lip gloss just yet.
