The next time you’re at odds with your man and you ask yourself, “How in the hell does his brain work?” remember this -- his brain just works very differently from yours.
Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania scanned the brains of about 1,000 men and women and discovered something quite interesting -- the male brains are “wired” in straight lines, or front to back, while the wires in the female brains zigzag between the two hemispheres.
So what does this mean? The researchers believe this offers an explanation as to why men are more comfortable handling one task at a time while women are more likely to excel at multitasking.
After taking a series of tests, the men scored higher on spatial processing (organizing visual information) and sensorimotor speed (receiving and responding to information). Meanwhile, the women surpassed the men when it came to the following skills: attention (ha!), word and face memory and social cognition (storing and retrieving information).
According to study author Dr. Ruben Ger, Professor of Psychology at Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania, these findings do more than just offer an understanding as to how men and women function. “…it will also give us more insight into the roots of neurological disorders, which are often sex related.”
Needless to say, we can help but think about the John Gray book -- you know, the one that spent 121 weeks on the bestseller list -- Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. Gray states there are fundamental psychological differences between the sexes, which he feels explains why men and women have dissimilar methods in communicating, handling stress and dealing with emotional issues.
This new brain study confirms a few things for us: One, there is a physiological reason why women can simultaneously email, chat on the phone and listen to the TV and men are glued to their computer screen, oblivious to their name being called. Two, it makes sense why women tell stories in elaborate detail -- a story that her girlfriends retain but was lost on her boyfriend after minute two. And three, since men stand out in some areas and women shine elsewhere, perhaps we need each other after all.
