Meet Alyssa Zukas, owner and operator of Etsy store Two String Jane. You ready to swoon?
Zukas isn't exactly a newbie to the world of design; her work has been featured at Urban Outfitters and Notschlock and she also designed Nikka Costa's tour t-shirts. A self-taught designer, Zukas works across several mediums with a similar feel each time – playful fun. But it's the kind of playful fun that makes her work so rare and special. A lot of her pieces would look great in a college dorm room or your grandma's kitchen.
For a girl with an already healthy resume, Zukas' prices are very reasonable. Adorable hand painted t-shirt? $24. Cutesy tape measure / pincushion? $19. Best of all, her shop mixes her handmade designs with carefully chosen vintage pieces.
The one that really jumped out at me was her collection of modernist brass figurines by Walter Bosse [$75/each]. Made in the 50's, the group includes a goat, elephant and bear that are about 5' tall and 3' wide. Originally used as pipe holders, Zukas recommends utilizing them as wall hooks – brilliant! You'll find lots of other Bosse pieces in her shop, including animal figurines [around $40] and a deco ashtray [$45]!
My favorite piece from her extensive homemade collection? The whimsical "Birds in Flight" dining room table. At $1,250 it might take me awhile saving my pretty pennies, but the originality and beautiful execution tell me it will definitely be worth it.
