A reddish bump that appears along the edge of the eyelid that has become infected. For example, a sty can form at the base of an eyelash if the eyelash root or oil gland becomes infected.
A similar bump, called a chalazion, is also caused by obstruction of an oil gland, but is not infected and is less painful than a stye.
